Publications or dog books describing this breed were very few; also in the various dog shows national and international, this breed was not present.. The first to arrive in Italy in 1984 were a male and bitch coming from Hong-Kong: DOWN HOMES FANCY CHILD and DOWN HOMES DING DONG into the KHAMBALIQ KENNEL. We can say that, while the male passed over on December 1996, the female lived up to 14 years old and died on July 1998.

The peculiarity of the breed, the many wrinkles the Hippo shaped head and the aloof appearance raised an immediate interest, so that several dogs magazines, TV shows started to write or show these dogs. Due to this the SP started slowly to be known, and to own a SP was considered a Status Symbol. SP were used in advertisements of expensive perfumes or skin visage creams.

It was evident that to own a couple of SP was not to be considered a kennel, so that in 1985 a second bitch

with black coat, JENTIKY BURNT TOAST, coming from one of the few existing kennels in UK (J.Baker breeder), increased the numbers of the existing SP in Italy. Soon after two more, male and female, TSIHMAO's PU YI and TSIHMAO's NUA MULAN, came from Germany from Linda Reinelt Kennel. These dogs were the foundation stock the first recognized SP kennel "KHAMBALIQ". In the beginning it was only an hobby for the owner . And from this small kennel embryo, started also the other kennels in Italy.

Of course the way to reach the present Italian quality level was long and hard. The foundation stock of Kennel " KKHAMBALIQ" officially recognized by ENCI (the Italian Kennel Club) started to enter the Italian shows and obtained the first successes and the breed started to be known to the judges. Very often such judgements were distressing, since several Italian judges knew the SP only for having seen some photos or because they had quickly given a look to the standard. Any way, between satisfactions and disappointments the first SP that obtained the Italian Championship, was the red female TSIHMAO's NUA MULAN, soon followed by the male, TSIHMAO's PU YI . We are referring to the beginning period of the Kennel 1985.

Surely a more experience and skill in showing of the owner, would surely ended up to get championships also to the others, it would have been sufficient to present them in the shows alternatively and not in competition between them, since at that time they were the only SP in Italy.

More than 10 years passed from the arrival of the fist SP, now the SP in our country are very much different from the first two arrived from Hong-Kong. The breed have improved and the recognition by the American Kennel Club of the breed, have permitted to several dogs to be imported in Italy from USA and be recorded in the Italian Kennel Club books.

We have however to mention the negative impact of the quick spread of the breed. Since the Italian production could not satisfy the requests, several SP were imported from abroad at the lowest cost possible, impacting on the quality, and many of these SP were carriers of lethal illness.

Every year approximately 100 SP are registered by our kennel club, whose only a minimum number exported abroad. Several Khambaliq SP were exported to South

Africa, where all became SA champions. Others went to France, Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, Germany Peru and Argentina. Presently an Italian Shar-pei is showed in the United States were obtained already several BOB, BOS and last year at the National Specialty won two classes.

In 14 years of breeding the kennel has produced approximately 40 champions between Italians, European, World, International, South Africans.
